The Incident, Part 1 & 2

Announcements

I want to thank everyone who attended the LOST season finale party. It was a lot of fun, as usual. The quiz we took was brutal! I got 34 out of 50 correct…poor, poor showing. But there were some trick questions here and there. For those who attended, I will be sending the link after the blog with the photos as well as the release forms from ABC. For us to enter the contest to be featured at Comic Con, releases are necessary. Please complete ASAP or I will be forced to forge them. Now, on to the show!

Let me start by start by saying that true to form I am completely depressed that it is Wednesday night and LOST is gone until 2010 (okay now its Saturday night, but it was Wednesday night when I started!) I have avoided reading anything about LOST as if that in some way changes the fact that it is gone. This season is not the first season that I have found my self in a sad stupor following the season finale….but it seems like it’s the worst. But I have decided to take a deep breath, raise my head high and bid adieu to another great season. I will save the impending total devastation once the realization that LOST is in its final season to January. So I say again, on to the show!

Oh, I did realize that I skipped a blog. I missed the episode Follow the Leader. It was pretty much a filler episode but I will touch on some of the themes in this review.

Summary

From the Follow the Leader episode we had Locke telling us he was going to kill Jacob. I thought this was just a euphemism; he was going to kill the idea of Jacob. We now know that he meant it literally. We learned that Richard was merely a guide/advisor to those on the island and did not play a bigger part in its leadership. Hurley delivers some great lines when questioned by Dr. Chang, “So you fought in the Korean War?” “There’s no such thing.” The episode was simply a bridge to the finale.

The Incident, part 1 & 2…what a great episode. The ending wasn’t as great as the flash forward season finale of season 3 or the “We’re gonna have to take the boy” season finale of season 1…but it was a great wrap to the season nevertheless. I haven’t re-watched it yet because the images are still marked in my mind. This time we are treated to the story of Jacob. When I think LOST has outdone themselves, they do something greater. A Jacob flashback, wow! We have the present day Locke and Ben on a journey to meet Jacob and the 1970’s Losties trying to blow up the island and change history. We wont know anything for sure for months. But I think they did succeed but not in the way they had intended. We can discuss that later.

Connections

Jacob is reading the book, Everything that Rises Must Converge by Flannery O’Connor. It’s a collection of short stories that were published after the author’s death from lupus. Her stories focused on morality and ethics. The story, Everything That Rises Must Converge, was about race relations and integration in the South. A Patsy Kline song, Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray, was playing over the PA system when Kate was little. Every item given back to Hurley upon leaving prison is one that Jacob gave to a character in a flashback: money (which he gave Kate in the store), a pen (which he gave Sawyer to write his letter, and a candy bar (which he got from the vending machine for Jack). Jacob touches everyone in his flashback and he saw 8 people from the island. Jacob is wearing white and his nemesis is wearing black. Jacob’s nemesis cannot kill him like Ben could not kill Widmore because of the “rules”. Something blows up each season finale (Hatch, Swan station, Looking Glass station, the Kahana and Jughead). The LOST ending logo was switched from black background white writing to white background black writing. When Ben makes his comment, “I’m a Pisces”, he is still lying. He’s a Sagittarius. Juliet uses a black rock to hit Jughead 8 times before it detonated. The giant statue is of Taweret, the demon-wife of Apep, the original god of evil. She also was seen as the Egyptian deity of protection in pregnancy and childbirth. She is holding an Ankh, the symbol of life.

Questions

The Leader – Richard knocks out Eloise saying that she is our leader and they will not be involved in the detonation of the bomb. How did Eloise become the leader? What happens to get her off the island? When Ben is a young man, Widmore is the leader. Who authorizes these ascensions to power? What is Jacob’s role in this?

Juliet – I am going to miss her!!! I wanted her and Sawyer to ride off into the sunset. I fear she is yet another sacrifice to the island. Jacob didn’t visit her in his flashback, so we can assume she was not special to the island and neither was her presence there. I believe in the end, Sawyer really did love her. She was wrong to have given up on them, but may have saved them all.

The Flash – So did Jack succeed? I think not. I think they will wind up back in their own time zone. I think the “they are coming” Jacob was referring to was our Losties from the past. They will figure prominently in the coming war. I think the detonation of the bomb happened as it always had. Charlotte remembered seeing Daniel as a child. Which meant their presence in the past happened the first time around. They were responsible for Ben changing as well as the incident itself. I think the Swan hatch was built over the Jughead to keep the radiation in check. Razinsky (being crazy) ran the whole button-pushing thing to keep it harnessed. Miles, by helping his dad, was there to see him hurt only his arm, which resulted in the prosthetic we later see him wearing in future Dharma videos. When Desmond detonated the hatch, no one died. I think everyone (except Juliet) lives. But they do not alter the course of the future; they’ve just insured it. I think the only change is that they are back to the present time. In their absence, history continued as it did before.

Jacob - What lies in the shadow of the statue? Translation: He who will save us. So we finally get to see Jacob. But as always we get to meet his nemesis. As everything on LOST island, good and bad, black and white. I believe Richard (Ricardus) was on the ship the Black Rock that Jacob brought to the island. He then made Richard the advisor to the future leaders of the island and made him ageless as a result. The Nemesis sees people coming to the island and causing unavoidable death and destruction. While Jacob sees it as progress as they evolve with each visit. In this sense, we see fate vs. free will. Jacob thinks they can be changed, while his Nemesis thinks what is will always be. What is Jacob’s connection to Illana? How does she know about him and what is a ‘candidate’? Who fights in the upcoming war and on what sides?

Fake Locke – So Locke is dead. The Nemesis found his loophole. When Ben told Richard that he was taking Locke to meet Jacob, he knew he was lying since Ben had never met Jacob himself. He takes Locke to an abandoned cabin to pretend to visit Jacob. But when the Nemesis speaks to Locke, he thinks it’s Jacob reinforcing that Locke is the new leader. So Ben tries to kill him. The Nemesis then uses Locke to manipulate his release. I believe every bad vision or manifestation was him. Even back when Shannon was shot in front of Sayid while chasing ghost Walt. Similar to how Nadiya was hit by a car in front of Sayid. Locke had to die and come back for the Nemesis’ plan to work. Perhaps Christian is the manifestation of the Nemesis on the island. He was able to reanimate a dead body. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Jack had to put Christian’s shoes on Locke in the casket. Once Locke was back, he was able to become the manifestation of Locke. By using Locke, he was able to fool Richard into bringing himself and Ben to Jacob’s location. And then manipulate Ben into killing Jacob. Or maybe Jacob was the manifestation of all those people, trying to cause them to choose different paths. Yemi for Eko, Walt for Shannon and Locke, Alex for Ben, Dave for Hurley, Charley for Desmond and Christian.

Final Season – I really think the final season will have everyone in the current time. I think Locke will continue to be the Nemesis and the real Locke will remain dead. Jack may finally be fighting on the right side against Locke for the island’s future. How Widmore, Desmond, Illana’s crew, Richard and Ben factor into all of this, I don’t know. It would be interesting if Bernard and Rose remained in the past and ended up being the skeletons in the cave. I am excited for the series to hopefully tie up all the loose ends. There are so many of them, I’m not sure if its possible. But I do believe that some will leave the island for good.

Conclusion

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for following and reading the blog. I feel a sincere sense of camaraderie and kinship just knowing you all are out there. I am warmly looking forward to kicking things into high gear for the final season. I would also like to increase the amount of feedback I get from you. I think the discussion and the processing of the details in this show is what makes it so fun. If I hear of things in the off-season I will be sure to pass them along. Be safe and take care. Until next year…c-ya!

The Variable

Announcements

I don’t watch The Unusuals the show after Lost even though parts of the show are good. I just don’t have a square to spare. Too much t.v. already. I tape it because Lost always runs long. So I watched the beginning this week and Harold Perrineau (ex-Michael) is on it. He plays a cop who thinks he is dying because he is 42 and all the men in his family died at age 42. So the part I saw he kept seeing the number 42 everywhere – the cash register was $42.42, the street where a killing was was on 42nd street. Not only is it a sign for him but a sign for us Lost fans since 42 is one of the Lost numbers. Anyway, on with the show….

Summary

Great, great episode! That’s what I’m talking about. We have Daniel’s back story and his connection to Eloise further explained. I was not surprised that Charles Widmore is his father, even though it was supposed to be a big revelation. There is so much emphasis placed on fathers in this show it just made sense. I felt really bad for Juliet as she seemed to be getting the short stick again. James seemed to want to stay in 1977 but with the addition of Kate. Juliet being as shrewd as she always has been is like here’s the code to the fence, get! So once again the people are split. Sawyer and his crew heading to the beach and Jack trying to save the day and send them back to 2009. With Daniel dead, I am not sure if Jack is going to try and change the future or let it play out as it did before. He seemed to trust Daniel, I think his destiny is to try and stop it. As far as Daniel being shot, we all saw that from a mile away. The way he referred to the fact that they can die and him walking into the camp with a gun, come on! I was a little bit annoyed with that, not only because Daniel was one of my new favorites, but because it was so obvious. We will discuss his conversation with his mother later. I liked the return to the nicknames “Twitchy and HG Wells” for Daniel. Hurley refers to them going back to the 50’s as “Fonzy time.” Too cute.

Connections

Daniel counts 864 ticks on the metronome which is 8 x 108. Desmond was taken to recovery room 16. Eloise gives Daniel the journal where he will eventually notate his thoughts about time travel. Charlotte tells Daniel that she cannot have chocolate before dinner. Those were her dying words in the jungle. The issue of Wired magazine in Daniel’s house was about technology and the possibility of x-ray vision, invisibility and time travel. It was the actual issue from 2003.

Questions

Widmore – If Widmore staged the Oceanic 815 wreck as was suspected earlier, than who does Ilana work for? She killed the man who had proof of the conspiracy to set it up and showed him to Miles. Widmore wouldn’t have killed his own man. So we have more confirmation of another entity interested in the island. So to recap there’s the Losties that just wanted to go home, Ben, Widmore and now the “Good Guys” (as the man in the van referred to himself.

Hydrogen bomb – So the bomb is still on the island and was not under the hatch. So the bomb is still there in 2009. Since it was the island that leaked causing the first incident. They covered it in concrete and then set-up the pushing of the button. Desmond didn’t push it, it released and brought the plane down. So Desmond wants to use the bomb now to stop the leak. BUT, perhaps he needed to fail. So that the people in the future could use the bomb in whatever way to bring the Losties back from 2009. What lies in the shadow of the statue? The hydrogen bomb.

Will all the Freighter Folk end up dead? – Most of the people on the freighter have died. I wonder how Miles will fair in all of these. They seem to be dying with no real resolution. Is it because fate is trying to course correct them being there at all? We shall see with Miles and Frank being the last. I think Miles does convince his dad to get some of the people off the island. But doesn’t the event still happen? The one where Ben kills everyone? So some leave, some stay. The make it through the event. Or maybe they fake the event. Dr. Chang becomes Dr. Marvin Candle. The one with no hand from the orientation videos. He speaks about the incident. But perhaps there was no incident because of what Daniel sets into motion, thus ensuring the future continues as it’s supposed to? And does Miles trying to save his dad, cause him to loose his hand and Miles to die, fulfilling his destiny?

Desmond is my constant – Constants and variables, whatever happened, happened. If Daniel was Desmond’s constant, who was Daniel a constant for? Or was he a variable since his presence seemed to change the direction of things? I think the future has to happen just as it was supposed to and their mission is to learn from the past to change things that happen in the future. If the war is being raged in 2009, then the Losties needed knowledge from 1977 to help fight it in the future. I think their presence in the past is to affect the future. Much like Terminator, their mission is not to stop judgment day, but to survive it. Desmond and Daniel are both constants. They both have done what they were supposed to. I believe Eloise gets Daniel’s journal from the Losties and reads it, which is when she knows how she must shape Desmond and Daniel’s life in the future. But now, Eloise does not know what is going to happen now because the Losties are the variables. We don’t know what they are going to do.

You always knew this would happen – Daniel was in a sense talking to his future mom not the present one. She had sent Daniel to the island knowing he would die. I think the island made him better mentally, but I do think he is dead. I believe she sent him not to change anything but for him to fulfill his destiny. She believes everything is predetermined and cannot be changed. But I am not so sure anymore. I am excited to see, not only how or if they get back to their own time but more so what happens after that.

Conclusion

To this point several things seemed to have been very obvious. I look forward to a time when I am completely clueless again, which I think is from now on! The season is almost over with only a few episodes left and we will start talking about the season finale next week. Stay tuned. Until then…c-ya!

Some Like It Hoth

Announcements

Hello all! Better late than never. I am still on spring break so need to get back into the swing of things. My hand is feeling much better and I am up to typing 40 words per minute (with a little Vicodine), but was assured by the doc today that I will be back to my old typing self in 2 more weeks. I did see the pictures from the LOST weekend a couple of weeks back. They had a lot of cool swag that I am ordering for the LOST season finale party which is coming up in a few weeks. Boy, how this season has moved by. Cast members at the weekend were Yemi, Nadia, Bernard, and young Ben. I could have sworn I saw Widmore in one of the shots, but that’s unconfirmed. But next year should be a blast because it’s the last one. But anyway, if anyone wants the link, let me know. So…on with the show!

Summary

I thought it was a pretty good character development show. I hate being wrong, so instead I will say that I was not right. I poo poo’d the idea that Dr. Chang’s baby was Miles and bam…it’s Miles. I guess I thought that was just too easy. Too straight forward, too obvious. Maybe that’s the point. The show is winding down and everything is tying up nicely into a bow. Of course if I mean Locke coming back from the dead on the island, time travel to the past and a mysterious war on the horizon, tying things up…then yes. But it just seems to me that before the flashbacks would be character development. Now they are connecting parts of the story. I really like Miles so I was glad to learn more about him. He’s scenes with Hurley are priceless. Favorite line: When asked how he knew that Dr. Chang was his father, Miles replied, “3rd day of us being here I was on line in the cafeteria and my mom got in line behind me. That was my first clue.” Of course the references once again to Star Wars were classic. “Ewoks sucked, Dude.” I couldn’t agree more. This is the second movie to lament the death of the Storm Troopers on the Death Star. I believe the first was in the movie Clerks. But Hurley always seeming to be speaking from the mind of the fans, reaching out to Miles and drawing a parallel between Miles’ relationship with his dad and Luke Skywalker’s relationship with his dad Darth Vader. Star Wars saga fans going crazy everywhere. I thought it was a nice touch. Not sure if Miles will end up being the catalyst for his dad sending his mom and him away. Either by telling him as Daniel tried to do with a young Charlotte, or in some other way. We shall see.

Connections

The title of the episode is a play on words, “Some like it Hoth’”. I am not that much of a Star Wars geek so I had to look this one up. It is the name of a planet in The Empire Strikes Back that the rebel forces escape to. In addition, Hurley's story in the notebook has a hidden meaning. Chewbacca saves the day in Hurley's story but it is Hans Solo in the movie. I believe he identifies with Chewy more. The title also references the movie Some Like it Hot about a comedic duo that witnesses a mob murder, much like Hurley and Miles witness the dead body of Alvarez. In the opening site, the microwave flashed 3:16 on the screen, a reference to the numbers and possible the bible – John 3:16. The apartment were the dead body was in was #4. The key to the apartment was hidden under a white rabbit. Miles was offered 1.6 million to go to the island (16) and then asked for double that amount, 3.2 million (32).

Questions

Bram - So we have another faction. Great! Still don’t know what lies in the shadow of the statue. There seems to be 3 groups: Locke/Ben/Island vs. Widmore vs. Ilana/Bram. Bram didn’t want Miles to join Widmore. He didn’t join Bram and has ended up on the Losties side. Hopefully we will learn more about that in the coming weeks.

Faraday – Did he flash to Ann Arbor or was he on the island and left on the sub and is now coming back? Ann Arbor is where the DeGroots where in school at the University of Michigan when they started the Dharma Initiative. What his role on the island? Who’s side is he on? Miles was brought because of his tracking ability and because he is Dr. Chang’s son. Charlotte was once on the island as well and was brought because of her archeological abilities, which now seem wasted now that she is dead. I am curious what Daniel brings to the table?

Where are we?

At this point I have never been so lost with this show. Daniel is back and hopefully he knows how to get them back to 2008. What has to happen before they can get there? Can they all go or do some stay back? Since this is their present, they don’t all have to go back. I would like to learn more about the Others. I think that is the main hole for me right now. What is Richard’s back story? How are they a part of the island? What is their purpose? As we inch further and further towards the end, I hope they answer it all.

Conclusion

Next week, no LOST. When they say no repeats, I want new episodes every week! They keep saying it’s a special show but it’s just a retrospective show. If you need a review, watch it. If not, we will get a new show the following weeks. So have a great 2 weeks and until we get a new LOST once again, c-ya!

What Happened, Happened & Dead is Dead

Introduction

Hi all! As you may have noticed, I did not write a blog last week. I had Carpal Tunnel Release surgery last Wednesday and was pretty much hopped up on a lot of Vicodin by the time LOST came on. Today is the first day really that I have used my right hand to type. I was pretty okay until I youtubed a video of the procedure. Yuck! And because I am truly a little boy in the body of an older woman, I took a picture of if. Warning! NOT for the faint of heart! But once you will see, you will understand the week and a day wait for the blog. Follow the link, [Ouch Alert] if you are as morbid as I am. Anyway, on to the show.

Summary

What Happened, Happened was a very straight forward episode. We got Kate’s flashback and what drove her to get on the plane. We pretty much figured out that she gave Aaron to his grandmother, not big revelation. We also learn that by Jack not helping Ben and Kate and Sawyer taking him to the Others, the Others become a permanent part of his life and for him to loose his innocence. Although I think that Ben losing his innocence was more of him having to grow up. Understanding good and evil. I think it was his own nature that turned him into a bastard. That is why the island replaced him. He lost his way as Widmore did. Not to mention his dad continued to abuse him until he was an adult which added to it.

Dead is Dead was good because we were able to learn more about Ben. But again, is he the good guy or the bad guy? I thought it was extremely creepy when Ben opened the door to find Sun – great scene. The show does spine tingling moments well. I think Ben ultimately didn’t shoot Penelope because the thought of leaving the boy without his mother was too reminiscent of his life. Also it reminded him of his encounter with Rousseau.

Connections

A connection in What Happened, Happened is the song, Catch A Falling Star, Kate is singing to Aaron. Christian sang the same song to Claire when she was little. In Dead is Dead, the name of Desmond and Penny’s boat is Our Mutual Friend. That is the name of the book by Charles Dickens that Desmond wanted to read before he died. The numbers were also on the crate Ilana had.

Questions

What happened, happened

I loved that Hurley brought up whole time travel question and reference to Back to The Future. It was like the producers were talking directly to us. I think that Miles did a great job explaining what it all means. They cannot change the past, what happened, happened. Even if they think they are changing the past, they are merely ensuring the future. 1977 is the Losties actual present, not their past. That is why they don’t remember it happening because it didn’t yet. That is key because that means they are not traveling back in time like Marty McFly, but actually traveling in their same time plane. At some point they leave1977, and I believe go to back to 2008, in their own time. Perhaps to help against Widmore and the war.

Ben would have hated the Others because he was shot by one (or so he thought). Instead he was saved by them and then promptly forgets the whole thing. Ben doesn’t remember Sayid shooting him in 1977 because it didn’t happen yet. The turn of the wheel caused Sayid to travel back in time and shoot him. So in 2005 he didn’t recognize Sayid because in the time plane he was not shot. Richard said he would have no memory of being shot by Sayid, not that he wouldn’t remember. No memory means to me that it’s because it didn’t happen. I thought last week that Ben did know that he was shot by Sayid. I don’t think that’s true. But one theory is that he might have had a sudden memory of him, much like Desmond did of Farraday. We will have to see on that one.

Dead is Dead

My guess is that Widmore is behind Ilana. Just in case Ben did find a way to get back to the island, she was sent to cover Sayid. But I find it interesting that they had the foresight to bring a crate of a weapons (?) with her. She was obviously not on the plane alone. What lies in the shadow at the foot of the statue? Yet another puzzle. Great! Perhaps the nuclear bomb. Is that phrase a password to find others working for Widmore much like the snowman riddle was for Desmond?

The smoke monster reacted to Ben kind of like Juliet and Ecko. Snapping pictures of their life and past. I think it was a rip-off to mainly show scenes we had just seen in this episode. The writers could have gone back to the tapes for some more reminders of his life with Alex. Alex comes to Ben in a manifestation and tells him he must follow Locke. I thought that was kind of anti-climatic. Will he really do it? I am not completely sure he is reformed. I think he was temporarily spared like Michael because he still needs to do something for the island. He probably will be later killed like Ecko because of his lack of redemption.

I think it was really interesting that Ben told Rousseau that if she hears the whispers to run the other way. Is that the calling card of the Others? Could it be that he was protecting her from them? If Ethan (the boy with Ben) had gone into the tent, he would have followed Widmore blindly and killed Rousseau and Alex. But Ben had some sort of a conscious. Why is Ethan with Ben now and the Others? Was he stolen as a child as the Flight 815 children were?

I really do like how Locke is coming into his role as the leader of the island. The Locke before was at times a beaten and broken down man. I like how strong he has become. I am looking forward to the war. Who will it be against and how will it be fought? Locke is now the new leader of the island, but why him and why now? What is Jacob?

Conclusion

I will make sure to let you know what happened at the LOST convention next week. I haven’t even had time to read the review and watch the videos. But if it was anything like the year I went, it should have been a lot of fun. The visit to the set of LOST went for $350 at an auction I was at. That did not include air or hotel. But if it had been around the 15th of the month…that trip would have been mine! Oh well…my time will come. Enjoy your holiday or Spring Break if you get one. Next week should also be a good one as we learn more about Miles. He has slowly become one of my favorites. Until next week…C-ya!

He’s Our You

Announcements

The LOST Weekend is coming up on April 3-5. I didn’t realize it’s the day of our big run (16 miles) in my marathon training so I think I may miss it. Even though it was the height of geekdom…I loved the hotel we stayed in and the pool was the bomb! So for having a relaxing weekend in Hollywood, meeting a few minor stars and a great dinner and dance, it was worth it. Email me if you would like to go or get more information.

Summary

First off the ABC promos lie. I knew that when the whole Aaron was an Oceanic 6 thing came out and their manipulation has not stopped. This episode was not what it claimed to be. Perhaps that is why I was a little disappointed. I thought we would get into the whole love triangle thing…but we got Sayid’s flashback instead. I am sure we will get the others flashbacks and learn why the decided to get on the plane. I like the idea of filling in the holes, but they seem to be using slow drying cement to do it.

Really, Kate? You couldn’t put together that Juliet and Sawyer hooked up? You were gone for 3 years and when you were on the island you were chasing after Jack. I thought it was fairly obvious. No funny lines or big revelations this week. It went back to the old formula of LOST – small movement in story, character development and flashback. It wasn’t a bad episode…just okay.

Connections

The book young Ben gave to Sayid was called “A Separate Reality”. Basically it’s written as a non-fiction book retelling the experiences of the writer and his time as an apprentice with an Indian sorcerer. Lots of hints to hallucinogenic plants and herbs in the book as well. The Numbers were on the car and backwards on the address of the building where Sayid killed the man. Sayid was drinking McCutcheon scotch, a reference to Widmore. The Russian letters on one of the buildings translates to Oldham Pharmaceutical. Oldham was the name of Sayid’s torturer. I guess he got off the island and made a fortune later with his truth serum drug. Although he was a little kooky…I didn’t seem him as the cold blooded murderer like Sayid. Sayid, I fear, is going to die soon. Much like Ecko, he is not redeemable and will fall to the island.

Questions

Is Ben dead?

I will be curious to see if there is any Back to the Future effect on what is going on in 1977 to 2007. If Ben is killed, will future Ben just disappear?!? I don’t think so. Knowing the show, the island will heal him.

What ever happened, happened. That is what Faraday said. So either Ben was killed and reborn by the island or Ben was just shot. I am going with the fact that Ben is merely shot and will be healed by the island. But what does Ben learn? That Sayid is a killer. So 30 years when Oceanic crashes, Ben knows him. He knows him intimately. He knows Sayid is a killer. Kind of like Saywer and Kate working on a runway when they were captured. Why? Because the island would need a landing strip for the future plane to land. Could Ben be experiencing the island much like Desmond? It seems like a dream but it’s a memory or premonition? I think it’s pivotal that Sayid shot Ben. Not necessarily because he kills Ben, but he, and maybe not just his dad, made Ben the way he is today.

Add in the fact that the island saved Locke when he was shot by Ben and thrown in a ditch and Michael & Jack could not kill themselves until they completed their destiny…my money is on Ben’s alive.

For those of you who don’t watch The Sarah Connor Chronicles, you don’t know what you are missing. Excellent show! You know…the whole Terminator thing. An interesting aspect of the show is that people from the future are sent to be with the teenage John Connor and his mother and stop judgment day. But these people are not necessarily from the same future. So their motives are skewed based on their future experiences. Relating that to LOST, let’s say for arguments sake that Sayid did kill Ben? That would cause the future to change. Is there only one set future? We know the future has to happen as it did before in many ways for them to exist on the island at all. BUT perhaps by someone else’s hands? For example, the purge could still happen, but by someone else. If you kill Hitler, perhaps Mengele turns out to be far worse. It doesn’t stop the future.

This was also in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. (Oh yeah…revealing ALL my geekdom!). Worf was on a shuttle and hit time riff and all of a sudden was surrounded by 20 other Enterprises. He was trying to get back to his original time. Some of the Enterprises were trying to stop him because they didn’t want to go back to their time because it was filled with death and destruction. He had to return to his time. This is why I think Ben is not dead. The island is keeping its future on course.

Thank goodness the island made sure there was a heart surgeon on the island to save young Ben. Thus exposing their lie about who they are. It seems as if Jack is on his way to saving Ben twice in a lifetime. Perhaps why he trusted him again to save him again in the future.

Conclusion

So another week down. I’m not going to do a countdown to the end of the season. It makes me nervous! Stay away from the spoilers. There are hints to something big happening in the world of weddings, births and deaths, but I have not read past Spoiler Alert to learn more than that. I saw about four different spoilers this week which means people are getting sick and tired of waiting for the story to unfold. Don’t be one of them. It will be worth the wait. So take care, stay strong, and until next week….c-ya!

Namaste

Announcements

I tried this new quiz, its all about Jin. I started out pretty good and then tanked. Beat my score, 6 out of 11. A very poor showing. http://lost-trivia-challenge.ugo.com/

Summary

I am open to critiques about the blog. I was told that my last one was sloppy. That I didn’t give enough history of the characters to better illustrate the connections. Mean, huh? But after watching this week’s episode, that critique was painfully correct. So allow me to travel back in time and include the thoughts from last week and roll them up into a nice bow for tonight’s episode.

Connections

We knew that Faraday saw a small little girl and thought it was Charlotte. When certain things are obvious, it’s more likely true. So let’s say it was Charlotte and Faraday was fulfilling his destiny of warning her not to come back to the island – even though he now says he wont do it. I am curious to learn where he is and where has he gone and for what purpose.

Amy‘s baby was guessed last week by many to be Ethan. That would mean is that some survived the purge. But in the future, they are viewed as Others like the…Others. So those who survived and where chosen became the Others led by Ben. This makes sense since Ben had such a strong connection to Horace Godspeed. Horace was the one who found Ben’s mom and dad on the side of the road. That is where Ben was born and his mom died in childbirth. 10 years later, Horace offers Ben’s dad a job in the Dharma Initiative. And Ben arrives in 1977 on the sub. When Ben assists with the Purge of the island, and returns after killing his father, he returns to the barracks. He walks up to a now dead Horace and affectionately closes his eyes. Ben takes responsibility for Ethan because of Horace and Ethan, along with a small group of others, go with Ben. I like the way Juliet realizes she is holding her future love as a baby. Cool as cucumber. (Ethan was a surgeon, dated Juliet, kidnapped Claire and was eventually killed by Charlie).

Now Razinsky is building the Swan station better known as the Hatch. I guess this is where him and Kelvin survive the purge since the station is a secret station. Kelvin dupes Desmond into thinking that he thinks he is Razinsky’s replacement. Razinsky kills himself before Desmond arrives to the island by boat. Razinsky desgined and built the Swan station as well as the blast door map.

Pierre Chang takes on the island of Marvin Candle after the purge. I am assuming that something happens that results in the loss of use of his arm. At this point, the Purge isn’t until 1992 so some 15 years away. We see Ben as a young boy offering Sayid some food.

Back in 2007, Sun, Frank, Ben and Locke are back on the island, ravaged by the attacked by Keamy and his men. (I am going to assume for now that Rose & Bernard are in this time period as well but have lived for 3 years now since the rescue separated from the rest of the group). People have told be that they thought LOST was scary, and I never really agreed. Until tonight. Watching it all alone in a semi-dark house. When creaking started like at Jacob’s cabin, lights turning on and doors creaking open, OMG! Loved it! I liked how Sun disregarded the smoke monster waiting for them on the dock as an animal. LOL. That whole scene had The Shining feel to it, right? But of course in that book, he just went cabin fever mad. In the movie, it seemed as though he were more possessed by the ghost of a previous version of himself. Great homage. Some noticed (my non-HD t.v. didn’t catch it, but there was a girl behind Sun when Christian showed her the picture. No verification yet if it was a blooper, a stage hand at the wrong place at the wrong time or another manifestation, like perhaps Claire. I am leaning towards Claire because the door blew open. Just as Christian didn’t open the door, this thing didn’t either. Perhaps someone behind the whispers that wanted a closer look? But notice Christian scanned the wall for the correct year that Jin was in. How many times has the travel happened and different people have taken that place. I think a couple of years ago we feared that the Losties were going to become the Others and then another group would crash on the island. Seems in many ways that thought is coming to fruition. Primarily in the lies. We often wished just for someone to tell the truth. Stop being so cryptic and just answer the question. And here Sawyer, Juliet, Miles, and Jin are now doing the same thing. But instead of in the future…the past. Genious!

Questions

- Why are they in 1977? Why those particular people? What are they meant to accomplish or is there something they need to stop? How will their decisions affect the future, if at all? This is the bigger question.
- Why bring Sun back just to be separated from Jin who is 30 years in the past?
- Ben’s arm healed once back on the island. Why does the island cure some things and not others?
- Who is in charge of Dharma? They seem no to have a strong leader right now, Ben ruled with an iron hand.
- What happened to Rose and Bernard? The barracks were pretty much trashed in the 3 years since the Oceanic 6 were rescued. I assume Sun and Frank will run into them. I still haven’t forgotten the 2 skeletons that were found in the cave.

Conclusion

I thought it was a good episode. I feel that LOST is however losing fans because you have to open your mind and the pace seems to be going even slower. But I am still loving it. I hope next week we hear more about Locke and where Faraday is. Everything else can wait. 7 more episodes of the season…it doesn’t seem like enough time. As always, I’m enjoying the ride. Until next week…c-ya!

LaFleur

Announcements

Lost Fan Weekend is April 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2009 in LA. If anyone is interested in enjoying a relaxing Saturday in Hollywood…sight seeing…lounging by the pool...oh and being surrounded by uber-nerds and talking LOST, let me know. I met Rose, Bernard, Yemi, Shannon, and Dr. Artz last time. Really nice hotel, silent auction, dinner and dance. The shag was cool too!

Summary

Great episode. All character development. Best lines go to Sawyer. Referring to Miles as Bonzai. And my favorite, “Your buddy out there with the eyeliner.” If that was not a shout out to the fans and their constant reference to Richard’s thick eyelashes, I don’t know what is. Beautiful!

What I liked most about the episode was how we got old Sawyer and bad ass Juliet. Sawyer falling back on his old skills of a con and Juliet as the best right hand man in history. Sawyer was wise, intelligent and very sexy. We knew Juliet would not be able to leave. I am very interested to see how the whole love triangle plays out. Not good so far since Sawyer didn’t just say, “There back!” but instead kept Juliet in the dark. I don’t think Kate deserves his love.

Connections

The four-toed statue was seen from the back. Daniel believes he has seen Charlotte as a child. The dates don’t exactly match, but close enough. When Sawyer wakes up from being unconscious, Horace asks if “How’s you head.” Sawyer says, “It hurts.” They each said the reverse when Horace wakes up from his bender. We know how Daniel is seen working for Dharma in one of the flashes.

Questions

Adjusting Time – Daniel said that whatever happens happened. So they are able to interact with the people in 1974. Does that mean they can now change the future? Will there next move be to stop Ben, the purge and eventually their plane from crashing? Daniel mumbles that he will not tell Charlotte to never come back to the island. Does he change his mind or will he in effect change the future?

Richard Alpert – I guess I thought since he was part of the island, that he knew everything. He didn’t seem to ask Sawyer as many questions as I thought he should. Why were the Others harassing Paul and Amy? Why kill them for having a picnic? How would taking Paul’s dead body back avenge their death – or would it just explain the situation by bringing proof that it was in self defense?

Babies – Is the purge the reason women can no longer have babies on the island? The intern was concerned about delivering a breech baby, not that the mother and child may die. Is Amy’s baby somehow special? He is about 30 in real-time. LOST never really introduces things without a reason.

Timeline – Since this was more of a character episode and didn’t reveal too many plot questions, I am just curious about the timeline. Why is it so important that they are stuck in this genre above the other ones? What is the significance of being there in the late ‘70’s? This is even before Ben comes to the island as a 10 year-old boy. I really intrigued by how they are tying things up. I read this great analogy that it was like puzzle pieces thrown on the ground and we sometimes complete the sky and clouds and other times the barn. Sometimes we start working on a piece we ignored on the puzzle box. That is what LOST is.

Conclusion

No LOST next week. I am not sure what is in on but it is not more important than LOST. After seeing the preview for next episode, I had an epiphany about the direction of the show. I will save it until I see it to gauge if I am right. But I am loving the way it’s going. Enjoy your week off. I will be chomping at the bit! Until then…c-ya.

The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham

Announcements

Ok. So the not talking about LOST until I blog is not working either. If I don’t talk about it, I forget about it. If I do, then I feel like I’m repeating myself. I can’t win! I will do better next week. I am officially lifting the ban on discussing LOST. I think it hurt me more than it affected any of you anyway!

Summary

I thought the show was okay. I felt that John really didn’t try too hard to get everyone back. He met with everyone once and then let it go. Ben was way more persuasive just by the way he spoke to them. I think it was important in a sense to notice the dichotomy. Locke was back in the wheelchair. Dismissed by all of them. Even Walt didn’t have much time to sit and chat with him. He was impotent and depressed. On the island, he was a leader. Physically strong and persistent, knowledgeable and skillful. On the other hand, Ben lost his followers. He got a tumor. Daughter killed. He was broken on the island. When I look at the episode from that perspective, I take back my okay statement. It was masterful.

Connections

The numbers were everywhere. It had been 4 days for Locke since he saw Widmore in the camp. Locke was told to press 23 on the cellphone to reach Widmore. The Time magazine had the hydrogen bomb on the cover and it was dated April 1954. According to the ID, Jeremy Bentham is born on 15 Feb. 48 (8 years earlier than Locke's real birthday in 1956). Locke and Abaddon are standing outside Southfield's, the New York branch of the London auction house where Widmore bid on and won the Black Rock diary (and where he met with Desmond) in 1996. Since we already saw the plane occupants, we know the connections between Cesar and Illana. Cesar is the Jack-like dude who is now the “leader” of the Flight 316 passengers. Ilana is his Kate.

Questions

Okay there are 2 trains of thought. One is that Ben, Locke, Sun etc are on a different time periods then Jack, Kate and Hurley. They flashed while the plane was landed safely on their current course. That would suck for Sun since now she wont be with Jin, but it would be totally cool to see how the groups eventually meet back together. The other thought is that they are in the same time period, but Jack, Kate, Hurley are on the main island and the rest on the Hyrda station (remember when Sawyer had that heart monitor on and Ben took him out of his cage for a walk), Since Sun and Frank took the boat, we shall see what they find when they get back to the main island. Is it the past or the present? Will they meet with the other Losties, like Rose and Bernard. I don’t know what the heck is going on…but I’m excited. I am voting for different time periods. Mainly because of the boats and the fact that Faraday's drawings were all over the office Cesar was searching. They looked old.

Why isn’t Ilana concerned about her fugitive? She did bring Sayid handcuffed to the island. I didn’t see Sayid in the infirmary. So where is he? Why were Cesar and Ilana on the plane? I feel a Widmore plant. Not sure which one.

Why did Ben stop Locke from suicide and then kill him and bring him back to the island?

Ben.

It bothered me that Ben stopped Locke from suicide just to murder him a few minutes later. But I think I understand.

Ben moved the island. He came back and manipulated Sayid for years to help him fight for him against Widmore. Ben didn't come back, collect everyone and head home. Because it wasn't time. Ben was watching everyone and keeping them close, but allowing them to live their lives. Until it was time. He didn't get to exact his full revenge on Widmore. But then...he saw Locke. He kills Abbadon, who was basically Locke's bodyguard. He goes to Locke to find out why he is there. He talks Locke out of committing suicide because it wasn't time. But the MINUTE Locke mentions Eloise, Ben realizes its time to get back to the island. Ben remembers Eloise (Ellie) from the island. He needs to get to her before Locke does. She knows the way back. He kills Locke, visits Eloise and is told how much time he has to get everyone together and to the correct flight and location. The portal would be re-opening. So, knowing that someone has to be brought back dead, he kills Locke. Sets up the suicide as a way to manipulate the others and it works. Or maybe not so much as time for the portal to open, but to prepare for the "war" that Widmore eluded to. Alpert seemed to get on and off the island. So did Mr. Friendly. But maybe it was Ben. And he could not go back without Locke since he turned the wheel. Why didn't Widmore just jump on the plane as well?

Widmore thinks Locke was tricked off the island by Ben as he was. Locke left willingly because he knew he could get back. Ben left and thought there was no way back. Until he sees Locke and learns his purpose for being in the real world.

Locke was never going to be allowed to kill himself. Jack and Michael tried and failed. It was not their time. Locke needed to die, but Ben had to be there as well to get the others. I am not certain that Ben knew that Locke would be re-born. He kept saying "I'll miss you." to him after the death. More so, sorry I have to do this but we have to go back. Not sorry, but its okay because you will be alive again soon. Or maybe because Locke is a little different now. Like Christian was and like Claire. Content. Resurrected. I will have to let this one marinate for awhile.

Conclusion

I think from this jumbled mess of a blog, I need the Thursday discussion! I think things are going to pick up on LOST island and I am sooo excited. I didn’t watch the previews for next week so I have no idea where we are going. But I am enjoying the ride. I saw the headline about Evangeline Lily leaving LOST. It’s a deceptive article. She has been auditioning for new TV shows. Not a big deal because this is close to the last season anyway. Not to mention the way it is shot, she can do both if she got another gig. Several character actors play multiple roles at the same time. I watch the TV show Life and Sarah Connor Chronicles. The killing terminator on one show and the Russian mobster on the other is the same guy. It can work. Not to mention I don’t think anyone would throw his or her career down the drain by leaving a show like this in its final season. But just in case, I’m staying away from any more potential spoilers. Have a fun and safe weekend and until next week…c-ya!

Announcements

Hello all! I just wanted to give a personal shout-out to WMC. I know they won’t be reading this for awhile, but my thoughts are with you making this very difficult for me to shift gears and focus on the lighter things in life. But that’s I guess how we eventually make it through…by looking for the silver lining in otherwise dark days. Much Love!

Summary

Onto the show…I think this episode was great if we had 3 or 4 or 5 more years of Lost. But knowing this is part 1 of the final season, we really did get a lot of answers. Or maybe “answers” is the wrong word. They took some theories and tied a nice little knot with a bright bow. They clarified that the island is moving. That there were different pockets around the world, as the doctor said to Rose and Bernard. Obviously that was what Penny’s men were tracking. It something you can find if you know what to look for. Of course with answers, there are more questions (see below). I was antsy the whole episode. From screaming at the tv for Jack to open the damn letter to thinking that Locke would re-animate as soon as Jack slipped on the shoes. Lost has a way of taking the impossible and making it seem normal. We had to take several leaps of faith as viewers this episode. Best Line: Jack to Eloise about Ben, “Is he telling the truth?” Eloise, “Probably not.”

Connections

So many connections this episode. The eye opening at the start of the episode was the same eye opening at the beginning of the series. Jack was even in similar clothes as the first time. The US army date on the Top Secret mission picture in the hatch was 9/23/54 – 1 day and 50 years from the Oceanic crash. If you think about flying to Guam (which I have done – it’s West of the international date line and is 1 day ahead of the US…making it the same day in effect). The woman sitting at the bar next to Jack was also a nurse in Shannon’s flashback when her father died. The comic book was the Y: The Last Man and written by one of the writers and producers of Lost. I loved that the hatch in the church was called the Lamp Post. It reminded me of the beginning of the Twilight Zone, you know, “That's the signpost up ahead - your next stop, the Twilight Zone!" They flew over an ocean and magically were flashed off the plane and onto an island. Major Twilight Zone! In this case, the naming of the station as the lamp post in relation to the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. A lamp post marks the entrance from Narnia into the real world. The Anjira Flight is #316. That can be related to John 3:16 in the Bible (For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life). It’s about belief. John leaves a note wishing Jack had believed him. Ben tells Jack that everyone believes sooner or later. Eloise tells Jack to start believing and take a leap of faith.

The coolest connection was the Oceanic 6 took on the roles of others of the people from the original flight. Locke is Christian in the cargo hold. Hurley was a cross between Charley (guitar) and Walt (comic book). Sayid being Kate (the fugitive). Kate being Sawyer (guilty and alone). Middle Eastern dude being Sayid (I thought he was from the past but his credits are only this 1 episode of the show). Sun being Rose (looking at her wedding ring as Rose did). Ben makes the flight last minute (Hurley almost missed the flight and him getting up like Charlie did). Frank Lupidus was supposed to be flying the Oceanic Flight 815.

Questions

What?!? – I know we don’t get answers on the show. But why not ask the obvious questions directly to Ms. Hawkings. Who are you and what the hell is going on? Why us? Were we ever meant to leave the island? If I can get meaningful answers to those 4 things by the end of this show, I will be satisfied. Also Desmond leaving after actually not accomplishing anything tangible was dumb. He gets it that it’s the same woman from the past but leaves without any answers!

Stragglers – How and why did the stragglers decide to go back to the island? What convinced Kate and who did she give Aaron to? Why was Sayid arrested and supposedly being taken to Guam? Why did Hurley come and bring a guitar? Hurley could have been visited by Charlie and decided to go. But Kate and Sayid? I will be interested in that flashback.

Revenge – Of course, why was Ben all bloody when he called Jack? I assumed that he went after Penny as his promise was to Widmore to kill his daughter. This could be why Desmond returns to the island – for Ben and revenge. I saw a post mention that Ben called from a pay phone at the Marina. Desmond may have sailed to L.A. by boat and Penny was waiting for Desmond on the boat when Ben came for her.

What happens when Ben gets back to the island since he wasn’t supposed to leave in the first place? Did the plane eventually crash when they flashed? Was it the pieces found on the beach? My guess is yes. The Oceanic 6 flashed back to the island as they flashed off of it in the first place. But everyone else crashed, perhaps in a different time.

Sayid, Sun and Ben – Are they in the same time as Jack, Kate and Hurley? My guess they are. If they are recreating the original crash – you have the 3 groups. Jake, kate, Hurley are the Losties. Sayid, Sun and Ben are the Tailies (Ana Lucia’s group). Locke is Christian in the jungle. Now that Locke has Christian’s shoes on, he can act as Christian’s proxy in this new time zone as Christian tried to guide Jack and Locke in the future.

Jin – So the Losties 6 flashed back to the past and are pretending to be Dharma. This is probably when Daniel sees Charlotte as a child. I am very excited to see what happens next!

Conclusion

So next week is a flashback in a sense to find out what happened to Locke when he arrived 3 years ago back in the real world as Jeremy Bentham. Next week’s episode was switched and was really supposed to air first. Not sure why it was important to change the order. My guess is that it was too linear for Lost and would have made too much sense! :) Okay…sour grapes. The episode is going to run 6 minutes past 10pm so make sure to dvr the next show in case you don’t watch it live. That’s it for this week. Feel free to comment on the message board below this post. I would love to hear your thoughts. Until next week, c-ya!

This Place is Death

Announcements

Hello all! I have added a new section to the LOST blog: Announcements. Here I will relay important (to me) information about the site or about the world outside of the episode but in relation to the show. I also added 2 links to the blog page. The first is Characters on LOST. If you ever get confused about who is who and how they are connected to another character, you can go there. The second link is the LOST timeline. Since we have flashbacks, flash forwards, present time and time shifts, things can start getting confusing fast. Both were created by people on Wikipedia. I thought about building it myself for about 5 seconds and then spent the next 30 finding them on the Internet.

Also at the bottom of the LOST Blog page you will find a message board box. I am still testing to make sure it works, but feel free to post on it. No better way then trial and error. I love the idea of us dialoging together about the show. Post comments, thoughts, questions, projections…no spoilers please! I like to discover the show as it happens and knowing the future ruins it for me (i.e. knowing Michael was coming back).

Also in an attempt to get these out in a more timely fashion, I will no longer be discussing the episode before posting the blog. What happens is I get all talked out about it and forget to type my thoughts out and post. Hence this Saturday blog! So be forewarned. No blog=no talk! Now, on to the show…

Summary

I thought his was a good episode. No big shocking moments that we have had recently, but still solid. I loved it when Sawyer and Jin are reunited. Very touching considering they have only known each other about 4 months. They are now like brothers. Also still loving Miles. When Sawyer looked at him to translate what Jin was saying, his response “He’s Korean, I’m from Encino.” Classic! I didn’t like the scenes between Sun, Locke and Jack at the pier though. I didn’t think they advanced the story much.

Connections

Although I still have not had enough or Rousseau, it was nice to see the beginnings of her story. Everything she told Sayid and later the Losties about her early time on the island was shown to be true. The musical box that Sayid fixed while being held captive (thanks R.G) was the same one that Jin comes across on the beach that Montand gave Rousseau. The gun locks on Montand as he is about to shoot Rousseau just like Sayid’s did when he was about to shoot her. Rousseau disconnected the firing pin with Sayid and I am guessing did the same thing with Montand. Ben tells Rousseau to take Alex to the Temple for safety from Keamy, I guess to be protected by the smoke monster. Rousseau and crew left from Tahiti on November 15th, 1988 – the numbers. Charlotte makes a comment about Geronimo Jack (who was mentioned in earlier episodes) and by Daniel’s former lab assistant while she was suffering the effects of time shifing. Most of the other connections were from last week (Oceanic 6 are at Pier 23, an anagram for reincarnation is on the side of Ben’s van).

Questions

Smoke Monster – Why does it click?!? I hope I learn that answer by the end of the show. I think they take away some of the mystery by it sounding like roller coaster acending a hill , like something that is being unleashed rather than and actual thing that attacks based on its own mind. Why is it protecting the Temple? What happened to the science team after it was exposed to it for several weeks (Rousseau was still pregnant and dead guy’s arm was not that decomposed)? Was it exposure to the monster or interaction with the Others?

Christian/Jacob/Locke – As said before in the cabin, Jacob is speaking through Jacob. Do they both still exist then? Christian makes a reference to his son and then there is a flash, like Daniel tells Desmond to find his mother, and then there is a flash. Always the mystery instead of – Tell JACK I said hello, Find my mother Eloise Hawkings – never simple! What is Jacob’s interest in the Oceanic Six returning to the island? If Locke, no Ben gone in the first place, how would things be different? It seems as if Locke was either destined to move the wheel and leave the island forever or sacrifice himself for the island. It seems as if he gets a raw deal no matter what. I didn’t like it when he became weak again. I like strong, kick-ass Locke. Not befriending FBI agent, swindled out of my kidney Locke.

Daniel/Charlotte – So Daniel will time travel again to Charlotte and tell her as a child not to return to the island. I am curious to who is Charlotte’s mother, or father in all of this. Is it significant? It would seem pointless for her to come back for a month and then die without a clear connection or purpose. I am sure we will see her again or her manifestation.

Oceanic 6 – Why don’t they ALL have to go back? I will be extremely disappointed if only some of them have to return. If Jeremy/Locke has been running around for months trying to get them to go back, Ben must have convinced him somehow that his death was the only way to convince them. Jack is going back because of guilt, Kate because of Jack, Sun because of Jin, Hurley if Sayid tells him to, but how do you get Sayid to go? I think he is the weak link.

Conclusions

Hopefully the new guidelines in the above announcements will make things run a little smoother. I think this episode was a connector so next week will be pretty great. I look forward to more Daniel. He has slowly become my show favorite. Feel free to comment in the message box. Any questions you have, please feel free to put it in there as well I’m sure our collective minds can answer it! You can use your real name, fake name, and initials whatever. All are welcome. So until next week…c-ya!

The Little Prince

Hello all! I think I am actually going to get this out in a timely manner! (kiss of death!). I am truly loving season 5 of LOST. I am falling helpless in love with Daniel. I might just have to re-watch the episode and stare at him. And as if it were possible, Sawyer is even more hot! Okay, fellas…I can hear your groans. But I commented on Kate and her panties and the shower scene with Jack last season…so let’s be fair! I am still waiting for more character development with Miles. I love almost everything he says.

Just when you think its going to be a slow episode….that nothing earth shaking is going to happen…BAM! Jin is back! I love it! I knew he wasn’t dead, but I didn’t know how or when he would return. It was beautifully done. So many questions so let’s get started!

Oh! For easier discussion I am creating a new name – the Losties 6 – Locke, Sawyer, Juliet, Miles, Daniel and Charlotte. Coincidence that there is an Oceanic 6 and a Losties 6? Coincidence that there are 4 boys and 2 girls on each side. Love the subliminal stuff!

Connections

The title of the episode The Little Prince a connection the French children’s book. I never read it but did a lot of reading about it last night. It was too difficult for my pea brain to understand especially having not read it myself. But the main theme of the story is the importance of looking beneath the surface to find the real truth and meaning of a thing. It is the fox who teaches the Prince to see with one's heart instead of just with one's eyes. I am guessing the connections are of Kate’s love for Aaron. The flashback emphasizes how she was there at the birth, then once Claire went missing and again now after the rescue. She loves him despite the fact that he isn’t her son. Besixdouze is the name of the French boat and that is French for B612 the name of the planet the Little Prince in the book was from. Also the author of the book disappeared in his plane in the Mediterranean. He was never found but his plane was discovered 50 years later.

Canton Rainier is an anagram for Reincarnation. They often say the numbers when speaking (Sayid was unconscious for 42 hours), it isn’t always visually (Kate’s address number is 42). I did notice it was raining in Los Angeles similar to the times it was raining on the island. It rarely rains here in Southern California so I thought it was nice mirror of what was going on the island.

Questions

Ajira Airways

I feel like an idiot. My daughter made a connection to the show that I hadn’t even made. I will pretend she is 24 and has watched the show since the beginning instead of a 9 year old who just wandered in for her goodnight kiss. When Losties found the wreckage of the Indian airlines Ajira Airways she said “oh the crashed again. I guess that’s how they get back to the island.’ Huh? Could it be? I was hoping for a door or a portal. But another crash…this time with the Oceanic 6 on it? I know if I boarded a plan and recognized all 6 of them on my flight…I would get the hell off it. But interesting idea. We know it’s the future since it was day time (flashes at night are the past, flashes during day are in the future). But we don’t know what happens on the island between 2004-2008 when Locke gets off the island and dies (Maybe the time shifts for him in the “real world” cause him to die?). We assume there wasn’t another plane crash so I would put the Ajira Airways crash at 2008 or later.

I am adding this as a Timeline page on the site but for the sake of this discussion I am putting it inside the blog for now.

Oceanic 6

1) 2004 Flashback – Kate on boat with Jack going to claim Aaron as her own.

2) 2008 – Oceanic 6 are being manipulated by Ben to return to island.

Losties 6

1) Time Jump (night) - 2004 – Losties 6 back a few months when Claire was giving birth to Aaron.

2) Time Jump (day) - Future (2008 or further) – Losties 6 at wreckage of flight in the future (possibly the flight that brings the Oceanic 6 back or much further in the future)

3) Time Jump (night) 1988 – Jin is washed on the beach with Rousseau pregnant with Alex. (Alex was 16 when she was killed by Keamy in 2004). Losties 6 once back on shore come across items on the beach in French

Jin

I love the fact that he is with Rousseau! They said we would get her flashback story last year…never did I imagine that we would see it as she was instead of a memory. I can believe that Rousseau never mentioned meeting Jin in the past because everyone went crazy, she killed people, her baby was stolen and she was alone for 16 years living in a jungle. I don’t think it’s a leap that she forgot or that she just never said anything (she wasn’t ever really talkative). I am glad we get to see what happened to her crew. The other question is if Jin will connect with the Losties 6 or continue to time jump on his own.

Miles

Another bean in the pot for Miles being Dr. Chang/Marvin Candles son. If Daniel is right and both Miles and Charlotte have been to the island before, what happened? Will the time jump eventually kill one of them before Locke leaves? I hope not. Daniel is being evasive. Really evasive. I don’t believe he doesn’t know what is going on to all of them. BUT maybe he cannot tell them because he can’t change the past. His past. He has been a time jumper for some time. So perhaps he is not telling them because it may effect what they decide to do.

Walt

So was Walt jumping all those time people saw him places he was not supposed to be? Just like Daniel is able to. That would explain tall Walt when Locke saw him. I think the times when he would try to stop something, course correct, he would unintentionally cause it – Like when he tried to warn Shannon and she followed him and was shot.

Conclusion

I thought it was a really good episode overall. I do feel that more is being answered, or should I say connected then previous seasons. I think that is what is leading to the overall feeling of satisfaction in this last episodes and with the show overall. I think those that left in season 3 were just really dissatisfied and confused. But this season there is definitely a lot more pay-off.

I have yet to make the alterations on the site but give me some time this weekend. I hope to add a link to character backgrounds, major (and minor themes) and a discussion board so that you can participate more. Sounds like a lot but hey…what are weekends for! So until next week…c-ya!

Jughead

It is soooo back!!! I haven’t screamed like that in months! Episode 3 of the Fifth Season of LOST. They still got it.

Welcome all to a new week and where I share my thoughts about the best show on t.v., LOST. Strong episode after a good season premiere last week. I watch the show on delay because I can’t take waiting through the commercials. So I can see the minutes tick away at the bottom of the screen, wishing, hoping the the episode would last a little longer. That it would tell me a little more. But alas, they leave me and ever other fan wanting more. Best line of the night, “Put the gun down, Widmore.” SCREAM!!! I can’t stand it.

Summary

I like the fact that old Locke seems to be back. More decisive, more in control. I am loving Farraday’s character. I always worry when a new cast comes along, but they are so well written, it works. I was afraid for a few minutes when they started talking about Others. I was seeing a whole new story arch. Come to find out, it’s the future them in the past. It was touching that Desmond named his son Charlie.

Connections

There weren’t many connections this time. But few that there were was more than enough. When Desmond went to find Theresa, the address had the numbers in it. The woman who was helping Desmond at the library was the same flight attendant that helped Hurley get on the Oceanic flight at the last minute. Desmond named his son after Charlie, which was really touching. Widmore had Namaste paintings on the wall of his office.

The biggest connection is that Widmore was an “Other” in the episode. What could have happened to make him leave? Ben isn’t born yet, so how does Ben assuming leadership of the Others tie in? Widmore said Ben broke the rules. That whole discovery is going to be good.

The biggest connection is that Locke tells Richard that he is their leader and that Richard will visit him at the hospital during his birth in 2 years. So in Locke’s flashback we see Richard at the hospital. It seems odd. Richard is fulfilling his destiny. He visits Locke as a young boy and asks him to pick the right item. Locke ignores the compass, the same compass that Richard will give him in the future, and picks the knife. Locke isn’t ready. Richard tries again when Locke is teenager, but Locke chooses sports and fun instead of going to island. I love how things are making more sense. TPTB do know what they’re doing!!!

Question

- Any guesses on who Ellie, the young woman Other that Daniel couldn’t take his eyes off is? I’m guessing a young Mrs. Hawking. It would make sense that they all knew each other. Just read it, Mrs. Hawking first name is Eloise. Eloise=Ellie. Daniel’s mouse was named Eloise after her. If that’s true, I buy less that Mrs. Hawking is his mother, he either didn’t know or didn’t seem that surprised. Could have been a good bluff. But I do think she was Mrs. Hawking but she is not his mother.

- What is going to happen to Charlotte? Will she live to find out where she was born? Why is this shift affecting her so badly and everyone else experiences them fine?

For the first time I feel all my questions will be answered. And not in a bad way…the show is making sense! Except for the fact that we don’t know how or why they are going back to the island, how Daniel figures into all this, who and what is Jacob and will the Losties ever be happy…I’m good.

Conclusion

Just a side note, The LOST Weekend is in Los Angeles this coming April. I went in 2007 and it was pretty fun. I was able to meet tone of the executive producers of LOST as well as some of the cast (Rose, Bernard, Yemi, Sun’s Dad, Dr. Katz and Shannon). I plan to go this year, if only to enjoy a beautiful hotel in Hollywood and lounge by the pool. The LOST dinner, dance and silent auction was fun too! More details later but I would love the company. But I can also be a mega nerd all by myself.

Loving the show as always…until next week…c-ya!

Because You Left & The Lie

I know, I know almost a week and no blog!!! You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. I have approached writing the blog several times the past few days. But I needed to get back in the mood. After just re-watching the season premier….I’m in the mood!

So welcome all to Season 5 of LOST. I am your host, Joanna, here to take you on a magical journey each week of the best show on tv. Oh there may have been others that stole pieces of you heart during the 8 month hiatus…but LOST is back! Better than ever.

I want to thank those who came out o the Yelp event to help celebrate the season premiere. It was a nice change of pace seeing the show out in the real world and I loved those nachos! If anyone is interested in doing smaller group viewings of the show during the season, let me know. TALKERS need not apply!

With that said…on to the show!

Summary

As mentioned before, the show as no longer going to focus on flashbacks or flash forwards. Clear your mind of thinking in those terms from now on. Now it is shifts a time to watch for. One thing to know, when they move to the past, its during the daytime. When they move to the future, its in the past. So when we left off in episode 2, it was nighttime when Sawyer and Juliet met up with Locke. Time still unknown.

I was confused about having 2 episodes back-to-back but it made sense after watching them. The Lie, ep 2, would have felt like filler had we had to watch it this week on its own. I like the dynamic between Sawyer and Miles. I think they are both tough, think mainly about themselves, but have a soft center. I look forward to them being paired more and more.

Best lines:

Alpert giving Locke the compass. Locke, “What does it do?”. Alpert, “It points North.”.

Sawyer refers to Farraday as “Dr. Wizard.” Miles correcting him, “That’s MR. Wizard.” “Shut up!”, snaps back Sawyer.

Connections

The alarm clock read 8:15. The stuffed giraffe with the baby on the island is the same giraffe in Aaron’s room. Hurley’s dad was watching Expose. Ben pulled ticket 342 at the butcher shop. Neil was wearing a red shirt (there was a mention earlier that in Star Trek, the crew member that was going to die always wore a red shirt). Hurley is again visited by a ghost (first Charlie and now Ana Lucia). We see Ms Hawkings at the end with Ben. She is trying to plot coordinates with a pendulum. They have 70 hours or else they will all die. She says “God Help Us” just like Pierre Chang in the orientation video.

Some key themes are:

- You can go forward and reverse, but you cannot create an alternate direction. If you try, time will course correct.

- If it didn’t happen, it can’t happen. You can’t change the past. (This point I missed. Sawyer knocking on the hatch for Desmond to answer. Desmond would never answer because they never met in the past. But when Farraday did it, he did answer, because they did meet before in the past and had a connection).

- There are rules that can’t be broken. But…the rules don’t apply to Desmond. (It also seems like Locke as well. He is shot in the past and is still wounded in the future. He dreams of a plane and discovers it with Boone. He now sees the plane land in person. Just like Farraday planting the message with Desmond and him remembering it now. Was it a dream or a memory? Another point about Locke that I just read, if he was shot in the future, then we he discovers the plane with Boone in the past, he has a sudden loss of feeling in his legs…perhaps from the gunshot wound? That is why Boone climbs up and is killed instead?).

My head hurts. There’s still more!

Questions

- Ms. Hawkings seems as if she is the time gate keeper off the island. First with Desmond, now with Ben. Does Alpert play that same role on the island?

- Was the baby really Pierre (Marvin Candle) and his partner’s? Was the baby brought to the island or was it born there? Can mother’s not conceive there due to the time shift?

- How is Farraday able to shift so easily through time? When was his trip to the mine as they built the Orchid station? Was it after Ben turned the wheel or does he know so much now as a result? Is Ms. Hawkings Faraday’s mother?

- I always believed that the whispers were people on an alternate plane of time. I believe more that they are the natural inhabitants of the island. Or maybe its them but they are shifting forwards and backwards. But check this out…what if the visions of the dead people are really those people in an alternate time as well. They are still dead, but either before or after a shift. So they cannot prevent their death, but they can interact with the living?

- Charlotte is obviously affected by the time shifts like Minkowski on the freighter was. He eventually died as his mind could not handle the shifts. How will this affect her?

- Who is trying to take Kate’s son (Ben to use her as bait back to the island). Who is trying to kill Sayid and capture Hurley (Widmore because he wants Huley’s talents). I think both Widmore and Ben are moving the Oceanic 6 like chess pieces on a board.

- What happens in 70 hours – 3 days? Is there another anomaly and they have to be in the exact same place to be transported back to the island? What happens if they don’t go?

- Is Ben course correcting for something he did before? He didn’t have to let them off the island in the first place, now to have to run around and bring them back. Was he trying to kill them when he killed Keamy? But they were on the helicopter, outside the radius and survived? Ben broke the rules. That is why Widmore had his daughter killed. Which ones did he break and how did he do it?

- Why harness this power at all? Marvin Candle knows he is close to a limitless energy source that can manipulate time. If you cannot change the past, why use it at all? Wouldn’t using it to go into the future, learn and bring that knowledge back effect the past as well? I guess my question is, what is the purpose of the island? See you in another year and a half for the answer to that one!

Conclusion

At least that still consistent with LOST, more questions rather than answers. But I am hooked again and I will try to be more timely with my thoughts. This season is called “Destiny Calls”. I think the theme is destiny vs. choice. Do they have the ability to do something else or is it all just fate. There attempts to make their own choices is what’s preventing them from having peace. We shall see! Anyway, have a good week…er..Tuesday – and you WILL here me after Wednesdays show! J But for now…C-ya!

Season 5 - Lost Premiere Party

Hi all! Welcome back!

It's almost here. Season 5 of Lost. I have stayed away from any spoilers and hints about the new season but my anticipation for the new season is growing. I can't wait!

As always, it's time to party! This time, I would like to do something different. Yelp.com is sponsoring a viewing event downtown. Details are below:

Taste & Thirst On Fourth
Gaslamp Downtown SD
715 4th Avenue
San Diego, CA 92101

They have 10 HDTV plasma screens in a private room, and all of them will be showing Lost. Additionally, there will be free appetizers and 2 for 1 drink specials all night long!

The party is from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. and then ALL QUIET during the show that's from 9:00 - 11:00 p.m. I'm still bringing my Scattergories (although we might not play - I'll be ready!). I think it sounds like a lot of fun. It is a late night...but what are we...old?!? Heck no! We're going to a bar to watch a TV show and play boardgames. Ok...maybe we are old. But it sounds like a good time anyway. :)

So email me at my Gmail address (jclark33@gmail.com) and let me know if you're in.

Tomorrow, ABC will be re-showing the season 4 finale. If you don't remember it - watch it! It was great. There will be 17 episodes of Lost this season with no repeats. I am also thinking of redesigning the site to include more discussion. Don't worry, you can just read, but I want to give those who want to participate the opportunity to.

Have a great week and hope to see you soon!
