Catch-22

Summary

I thought it was a good episode. It seemed to still go sideways instead of forward. Nothing can be as bad as the Paolo/Nikkie or Jack tattoo episode…in comparison….this was a masterpiece! It did reveal a little more into Desmond (which we will get into later) and why he is so special to the group. I love it when Lost injects humor. Sawyer’s lines, “Do you need me to make you a mix tape?” “My doorbell busted again?” “Are you two arguing over whose your favorite Other?” Love it! Hurley was also funny with his “Everybody loves marshmallows.” And after the ghost story in Korean, “I loved the part about the bird…there was a bird, wasn’t there?” Great! Even Jin was funny when he was speaking in a high pitched voice telling the ghost story. I had to rewind that. I did like this episode, but I am back to analyzing it instead of just watching it. I will try to do better next week!

Connections

Small to large: The numbers were on the crates of wine at the monastery. Brother Campbell said they only made 108 bottles. Hurley brought a comic book about the Flash to the island. Every time Hurley said the word Flash there was a flash of lightening or flash from the sun. It annoyed me at first but then I caught on. It rained signifying something was going to happen. Kind of funny how Hurley told Desmond he should have warned them to bring an umbrella since he knew it was going to rain. Of course the bigger warning being that Charlie was in danger. Brother Campbell told Desmond he was “one of us.” That same phrase used about Juliet. Desmond uses the phrase, “Welcome, brother.” He got that from the monastery. Ecko and Desmond both spent time in the church. The cross in Ecko’s church and in the monastery was the same. Desmond asked Jack for the first aid kit to fix his ankle which is similar to their first encounter at the stadium. Ms. Hawkings picture was on Brother Campbell’s desk implying that they are both working together to lead Desmond on his path to eventually go to the island. The book, Catch-22, was with Naomi when she landed in the trees. It was in Portuguese. Portuguese was the language the 2 men were speaking at the end of Season 2 in the station looking for the anomaly and ultimately Desmond. The book Catch-22 is also non linear just like Desmond’s visions. The whistling, Colonel Bogey March, was in the movie The Bridge on the River Kwai. Also Breakfast Club, which is where I remember if from. Coworker, RG, made the connection between their journey and the book Stand By Me by Stephen King. Four boys (men) going to see a body (Penelope). Other similarities were the scary ghost stories by the campfire and discussing comic books during the walk.

Questions

“You’re always running from everything that you never consider what you are running too.” That is what Brother Campbell said to Desmond. I kind of feel that is the real Catch-22 and message of this episode. He is always trying to prove he is not a coward by acting cowardly. He left Ruth because he had a calling. He left Penelope to prove he was worthy and to save the world. He is never there to be with the people he is actually trying to be with. Like a doctor always working so he can be with his family isn’t able to be with his family because he is always working. The viscous cycle. Again this was reinforced by Mrs. Hawkings picture with Brother Campbell.

I thought the point was to save Charlie, but I don’t think Charlie is in any danger that Desmond could stop. Charlie was almost killed by the plane crash, then plane parts exploding, then Ethan, then the hatch blowing up. He already had near death experiences before Desmond ever arrived. So I don’t believe its Desmond’s mission to protect Charlie. And by doing that, he is missing his real mission.

Desmond’s vision showed the possibility of Charlie dying. But it also showed Charlie holding the parachute. So he wasn’t supposed to die. The question wasn’t if he let Charlie die, he gets Penelope as Desmond thought. But really if you choose this path, Charlie will be killed unless you stop it. Charlie would have never been in that position had Desmond not set them all up.

So who is Naomi? A helicopter had to have taken off nearby. So does that mean they are 3-4 hours away from land or a large carrier? If they are that close, will they be rescued? Was she sent by Penelope? If so, why alone? Based on her flight suit she was flying at a high altitude. So does the island have a cloak? Perhaps as the helicopter came down for a closer look, it hit the barrier, lost power and crashed into the ocean, Naomi ejecting onto land. Of course my theory is much more suspicious as Ben saying, “See you in a week.” Is she really an Other? Desmond was in the hatch for 3 years so they do know all about him. They could have a helicopter that doesn’t go very far so it can’t be used to actually leave the island. It did act very familiar with the red light beacons as the food drop plane. Richard Alpert could have gotten a copy of Desmond and Penelope from Penelope’s room and it’s all a set-up. For what ultimate goal, I’m not sure. If they thought Walt was special, wouldn’t they know about Desmond too? Remember the whole questioning of, “Has Walt ever been some where he wasn’t supposed to be?” Desmond was home and based on the timeline he wasn’t supposed to be.

It is possible, since the Others didn’t know of the boat, that someone could reach the island, especially now that the Flame hatch has been destroyed. So it would be nice to think that Penelope sent Naomi and they will all be rescued. Yeah! Lost over!  We all know that straight line isn’t plausible on Lost island. Way too easy!

Conclusion

Well….just 4 more episodes left. I am sick and tired to the previews because they can be very misleading. Next week will be about Sun and her pregnancy. I think the key will be to find our if Juliet knew and that was why she is infiltrating the group. If you have not already heard….after these episodes…no more lost until January. This MAY change but for now instead of the long break, they are delaying the start. I hope that they rethink it, I will keep you posted. Until next week, c-ya!
