Catch-22

Summary

I thought it was a good episode. It seemed to still go sideways instead of forward. Nothing can be as bad as the Paolo/Nikkie or Jack tattoo episode…in comparison….this was a masterpiece! It did reveal a little more into Desmond (which we will get into later) and why he is so special to the group. I love it when Lost injects humor. Sawyer’s lines, “Do you need me to make you a mix tape?” “My doorbell busted again?” “Are you two arguing over whose your favorite Other?” Love it! Hurley was also funny with his “Everybody loves marshmallows.” And after the ghost story in Korean, “I loved the part about the bird…there was a bird, wasn’t there?” Great! Even Jin was funny when he was speaking in a high pitched voice telling the ghost story. I had to rewind that. I did like this episode, but I am back to analyzing it instead of just watching it. I will try to do better next week!

Connections

Small to large: The numbers were on the crates of wine at the monastery. Brother Campbell said they only made 108 bottles. Hurley brought a comic book about the Flash to the island. Every time Hurley said the word Flash there was a flash of lightening or flash from the sun. It annoyed me at first but then I caught on. It rained signifying something was going to happen. Kind of funny how Hurley told Desmond he should have warned them to bring an umbrella since he knew it was going to rain. Of course the bigger warning being that Charlie was in danger. Brother Campbell told Desmond he was “one of us.” That same phrase used about Juliet. Desmond uses the phrase, “Welcome, brother.” He got that from the monastery. Ecko and Desmond both spent time in the church. The cross in Ecko’s church and in the monastery was the same. Desmond asked Jack for the first aid kit to fix his ankle which is similar to their first encounter at the stadium. Ms. Hawkings picture was on Brother Campbell’s desk implying that they are both working together to lead Desmond on his path to eventually go to the island. The book, Catch-22, was with Naomi when she landed in the trees. It was in Portuguese. Portuguese was the language the 2 men were speaking at the end of Season 2 in the station looking for the anomaly and ultimately Desmond. The book Catch-22 is also non linear just like Desmond’s visions. The whistling, Colonel Bogey March, was in the movie The Bridge on the River Kwai. Also Breakfast Club, which is where I remember if from. Coworker, RG, made the connection between their journey and the book Stand By Me by Stephen King. Four boys (men) going to see a body (Penelope). Other similarities were the scary ghost stories by the campfire and discussing comic books during the walk.

Questions

“You’re always running from everything that you never consider what you are running too.” That is what Brother Campbell said to Desmond. I kind of feel that is the real Catch-22 and message of this episode. He is always trying to prove he is not a coward by acting cowardly. He left Ruth because he had a calling. He left Penelope to prove he was worthy and to save the world. He is never there to be with the people he is actually trying to be with. Like a doctor always working so he can be with his family isn’t able to be with his family because he is always working. The viscous cycle. Again this was reinforced by Mrs. Hawkings picture with Brother Campbell.

I thought the point was to save Charlie, but I don’t think Charlie is in any danger that Desmond could stop. Charlie was almost killed by the plane crash, then plane parts exploding, then Ethan, then the hatch blowing up. He already had near death experiences before Desmond ever arrived. So I don’t believe its Desmond’s mission to protect Charlie. And by doing that, he is missing his real mission.

Desmond’s vision showed the possibility of Charlie dying. But it also showed Charlie holding the parachute. So he wasn’t supposed to die. The question wasn’t if he let Charlie die, he gets Penelope as Desmond thought. But really if you choose this path, Charlie will be killed unless you stop it. Charlie would have never been in that position had Desmond not set them all up.

So who is Naomi? A helicopter had to have taken off nearby. So does that mean they are 3-4 hours away from land or a large carrier? If they are that close, will they be rescued? Was she sent by Penelope? If so, why alone? Based on her flight suit she was flying at a high altitude. So does the island have a cloak? Perhaps as the helicopter came down for a closer look, it hit the barrier, lost power and crashed into the ocean, Naomi ejecting onto land. Of course my theory is much more suspicious as Ben saying, “See you in a week.” Is she really an Other? Desmond was in the hatch for 3 years so they do know all about him. They could have a helicopter that doesn’t go very far so it can’t be used to actually leave the island. It did act very familiar with the red light beacons as the food drop plane. Richard Alpert could have gotten a copy of Desmond and Penelope from Penelope’s room and it’s all a set-up. For what ultimate goal, I’m not sure. If they thought Walt was special, wouldn’t they know about Desmond too? Remember the whole questioning of, “Has Walt ever been some where he wasn’t supposed to be?” Desmond was home and based on the timeline he wasn’t supposed to be.

It is possible, since the Others didn’t know of the boat, that someone could reach the island, especially now that the Flame hatch has been destroyed. So it would be nice to think that Penelope sent Naomi and they will all be rescued. Yeah! Lost over!  We all know that straight line isn’t plausible on Lost island. Way too easy!

Conclusion

Well….just 4 more episodes left. I am sick and tired to the previews because they can be very misleading. Next week will be about Sun and her pregnancy. I think the key will be to find our if Juliet knew and that was why she is infiltrating the group. If you have not already heard….after these episodes…no more lost until January. This MAY change but for now instead of the long break, they are delaying the start. I hope that they rethink it, I will keep you posted. Until next week, c-ya!

One of Us

Hello all! Still having problems with my “E” key but I will muster through. Yes, a blog before noon (Oops…okay I got side tracked! A blog before 1pm). I am getting use to the whole 10 p.m. start time. But there is so much to research! Anyway, on with the show.

Summary
I thought it was a GREAT episode last night. However, in some ways it’s like they are revealing too much! TPTB (inside lingo: The Powers That Be) have always maintained that most of the things happening on the island are rooted in reality. It really is starting to look like it. I love the way they are developing Sawyer. Still a smart aleck but his softer side is starting to emerge. He gave Jack a nod, handshake and a man hug. Offered Claire some aspirin without any compensation. The embrace with Kate brought many women to grab their dvr remote controls and rewind over and over. Okay…maybe it was just me.

Connections
The numbers were everywhere as usual. On the license plate, injection bottle, the sub and the medical chart. Downtown, we now know, is Juliette’s song and often played to make her feel comforted and remind her of home. Song played again last night. Herarat Aviation is an anagram for Amelia “Earhart”. She mysteriously disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. Reference again to the book Carrie. I read about this one, there were 324 passengers on the plane, 3 sections (Losties, Tailies, the Dead), 3 divided by 324 is 108. The tree had the same mark as Juliette on her back. I have no clue what that could mean. Perhaps making her part of a specific tribe? But why would it be on the tree in which Ethan used as his old medical drop off point? Some type of marker. I would be interested to see who else has this mark.

Questions
Let me start by dispelling some of the things that we thought. Richard Alpert can go back and forth off the island, at least up until the purple flash. The Losties crashing on the island was random. The Others learned about them after the crash, thanks to Mikhail. They must have covered up the screens because they were not on when Locke, Sayid and Kate were there. I think the illusion of the Others was in full force once the Losties started to cross the line that Tom drew. So things were hidden. Ben and Juliette were not lovers, it was her and Goodwin. And finally that Juliette was not left behind but a plant (which I thought last week, thank you very much).

Was the whole kill Ben thing a hoax? As evidenced by Claire, they don’t mind the long con. Or did Ben just turn around the opportunity of the Juliette double cross to his advantage. I think the latter and he is now using her since she was going to get off the island.

I believe Juliette is working everyone. She was the last Other brought to the island. She has only been there 80 days technically after learning her sister was okay and that she can’t leave. So she wants to go and does not share their love for the island or desire to cure the birth issues. So I believe she will do whatever she can to get off the island. Right now, that means spying on the Losties. But spying on who? Claire and Aaron? Soon to be Sun once they learn she is pregnant, if they already don’t know. I wonder what they think they need to learn since they seem to know everything. All they want to do is leave. And now that they have Jack, they have no real reason to go after them. The surgery is over. So what new threat are the Losties?

Juliette’s flashback was true but her explanation of Ethan was a lie. They were not helping Claire since Alex was the one to release her from Ethan and Alex has always worked to protect the Losties. So what where they doing to her besides giving her an implant? We know that a woman can give birth on the island since Rousseau was 7 months pregnant with Alex. Ben said he had been on the island all his life, not exactly the same as being born there. But perhaps his mother arrived already pregnant like Claire, Rousseau and Sun. So we thought they were using the Losties in the experiment and they are. Evidenced by Ben, “We’ll find more mothers.” I think Jack was a lucky addition since he was a surgeon. Does Sawyer now have an implant too which they will use against them at a later time? !

As far as what Juliette knew about Sayid and Sawyer, by then, that information was given to her by Mikhail. The police would have known about Sawyer by then and Basura is the 2nd largest city in Iraq. Only logical that Sayid probably tortured someone there. Also, it could have been his last stop and the one that caused him to want to run away from his past. Juliette, like a psychic, take pieces and allowed their guilt to fill in the rest.

The biggest A-HA for me was the mention of Jacob. The island cures cancer. Ben said, “Have you seen even a trace of cancer?” specifically. Why not some other disease? It makes sense since Juliette’s research is based on working with a cancer patient. When Ben said that he will cure her sister’s cancer, Juliette insinuates that it can only be done on the island. So there are properties on the island that cure cancer. Hence her being angry with Ben after discovering the tumor. But then Jacob’s name is brought up and he will take care of it. So who or what is he?!? Is he a person or an entity? Can he get off and on the island? I think Ben lied. A liar, as I said before, tells 90% truth and 10% lie. So I believe the sister was okay and the video was of her and her son. But she did not have a relapse. Screenshots of the chart show that it was of an adult male. So he manipulated her to stay on the island. He eventually just told her no at the end. But the main point is that Juliette thought he or Jacob could do it. So that hints about how powerful he/it is. But why couldn’t Jacob cure Ben? So many questions!!!

Summary
5 more episodes?!? Say it isn’t so! I am already starting to feel the loss. I definitely want to have a season finale gathering in my new digs. So put it on your calendars now!!! The interesting questions are what is up with Locke, where the heck is Rousseau, and will Sayid come through and catch Juliette. It would be a huge disappointment if he doesn’t. They all have roles to play and him being as dimwitted as Jack shouldn’t be one of them. Jack may have some tricks up his sleeve. We shall see. Until next week, c-ya!

Left Behind

Wednesday seems like forever ago!!!! I moved to my new home Thursday so that is my reason for the delay. My fingers barely work but I know that if you woke Friday morning and still no blog, you would learn my new address and hunt me down. Also I am using a new laptop and the “E” key doesn’t work well. Thank goodness you don’t need that one! So my 60+ words a minute is more like 10.

Enough with my bellyaching….on to the show. Before I start I did attend the Lost Weekend in Hollywood last weekend. It was ok. I am a party planner at heart so I thought there should have been more opportunities to buy things and constant activities. So it turned out to be a little vacation….which I hate. But I did meet some people who now speak to me on the boards which is cool. The dinner and auction were great and I got some neat little things to add to my office collection. I also met some of the “B level” cast members. There is a link on the right to my online photo album so you can seem them as well.

Summary
Great episode. I had to hit the boards this morning to refresh my memory about some things. The main story was again a rewind in the sense that we know Kate’s mother is now dead from cancer and we now know why she was screaming when Kate came to see her in the hospital (which lead to the Agent getting her plane, putting it in the bank, her robbing the bank, best friend killed, getting captured, black horse distracting them, her getting away, farm guy selling her out, eventually recaptured, plane, island). Her mom had warned her. Sawyer must have left recently since he was served at the diner by Kate’s mom. I also liked the Hurley subplot. I don’t think Sawyer was truly conned, but really wanted to go along with it because he does want to be liked. I think Sawyer as temp leader is great, with of course his loyal right hand Hurley, the voice of reason. Best line, “Call her Claire.” So simple yet so funny. I respect the fact that Sun is still ticked. Makes it more real.

Connections
The Patsy Cline song “After Midnight” played again. The numbers were in the license plate of Kate’s car and the tow company. Juliette enters a four digit code to turn on the security fence, 1623. She dislocated her shoulder 4 times. I immediately thought of the Christian book series, Left Behind, when I heard the title of the episode. The “chosen” ones are taken from their everyday lives. Another religious undertone, Kate calling herself Lucy and Cassidy stating that Lucy was a saint. The Feast of Saint Lucy is on December 13, same day as it is on the island and there was a feast on the beach. Sawyer is reading Watership Down again and Claire is reading Rick Romer’s Vision of Astrology (fun trivia, Rick Romer is really the set director for Lost). I kept reading about Kate’s cap saying “Cowboy Up”. I thought it just meant man up. I read further and it is a catch phrase which was used towards the 2003 Boston Red Sox. So connection to Jack.

I thought it was interesting how Kate is working with Sawyer’s girl in the flashback and Jack’s girl in the present. I also thought a lot about Echo and how he thought he killed a man and was justified, just like Kate did. Neither realized that that was not their only option and should be sorry they did. I

Questions
Big reveal about the smoke monster. Wow! So it is something the Others don’t control. Some theories were that it was their scanning system and someone was controlling it. Someone still might but it’s not them. I believe it does scan people or snaps pictures of who they are. Noone could miss that shutter and flash sound the monster was making. So “we don’t know what it is but we know it doesn’t like our fences”. The smoke monster could have got them in the tree if it wanted to. The fence is there to protect the Others from Hostiles but it has a secondary purpose and can keep out the smoke monster. Juliette did not seem afraid of it, more cautious. I think it scanned Juliette, discovered she is good and left. I think it was coming for Kate. Juliette was a scared woman in her flashback and now she can do hand to hand combat, I look forward to seeing how that all came about. I don’t trust her, but I don’t think she is bad. The whole “I’ll get Sayid and you get Jack” was another set-up. Why would she get Sayid? I believe she went to a monitoring station and watched Kate and Jack. Possibly radioed the Others and let them know her status. She knows too much to just let her go. Sawyer wasn’t really going to be banished from the beach and I don’t believe Juliette was either. Juliette set-up the whole handcuff thing because she needed another ally and is using Kate’s guilt. Kate messed up Jack’s plan to get off the island by brining Locke to save him. She also, as her mother said, can’t help who she loves, and I think she feels guilty for wanting Sawyer.

Locke going with them, possibly underground, is interesting. That whole thing with his dad is going to be great to learn more about. So they gain one (Locke) and lose one (Juliette). The other big question is what happened to Rousseau. I think she will follow the Others now that she has seen Alex.

Summary
Another great week. Lost folks keep it coming. I am looking forward to the interrogation by Sayid. Thought he wasn’t going to do that anymore?!? I stayed away from anything that resembled a spoiler at the weekend. They all know A LOT. But thanks to the direction of this season, don’t need them. I’m just enjoying the ride! Until next week, C-ya!
